Certified FTTX Specialized Installer – (TR-FTTX)

Course Information

“Fiber to the X” (FTTx) is the hottest network topic since TCP/IP. In this course we discuss various network designs, installations, maintenance and troubleshooting. This is a hands-on, 3-day course designed to provide students with a practical understanding of FTTx networks. FTTx Installer students will learn the difference between an Active and a Passive Optical Network (PON). The advantages and disadvantages of each system and how they are currently being implemented in the field are featured in this course. Students will learn splicing, testing and installing techniques for an FTTx network.

Students will learn:

  • Active and PON design and installation
  • FTTx splicing, connectors and enclosures
  • Complete testing from the remote site to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal)
  • Testing customer premise install to ensure that it is FTTx accessible
  • Students will build and complete the hands-on portion of a FTTH system
  • Connectorization
  • Testing
  • Troubleshooting

Course Synopsis

  1. Lecture Topics Include
    • Fiber Basics and Theory
    • PON Systems: Applications, Networks, Design and Testing
    • ACTIVE Systems: Applications, Networks, Design and Testing
    • FTTx Construction and Testing
    • FTTx Splicing, Connectorization and Testing
    • Active/PON (FTTH) Qualification and Troubleshooting
  2. Hands-On Labs
    • Perform and complete a fusion and mechanical splice
    • Test loss budget of system using power meter and light source
    • Perform PON and ACTIVE testing at different wavelengths
    • Install prepared OSP cable into PON closure
    • Splice PON splitter pigtail to OSP fiber
    • Install appropriate connectors on 3mm jacketed jumper and on 900 buffered fiber
    • Install break-out kit on OSP fiber cable
    • Qualify and test splices and connectors
    • Run FTTx system test traces
    • Perform loss and system budget calculations
  • Hands-On Workshop (Optional) – This optional hands-on workshop is designed for those who desire more intensive hands-on training for immediate entry into their specific field of study. Students typically take advantage of this workshop by adding an additional day to any of FiberOptic.com’s hands-on training courses.
