This Summer FiberOptic.com attended the 2014 Lightwave Optical Innovation Summit.

Here’s a look back at our test and measurement demonstration at the show.

We started our demonstration (00:12 -03:47) with our service technician and trainer, Koda Williamson, demonstrating on various fusion splicers and showing each of their unique capabilities. In the video you will see Koda splicing on the PRO-790 Core Alignment Fusion Splicer giving us connectivity from “Point A” to “Point B”. In addition to the PRO-790, Koda demonstrates the fully automated speed of the The Fujikura 70S Fusion Splicer. Lastly, Koda demonstrations the “One-Stop Shop” that is the OFS 950S Fusion Splicer with its built-in fiber holders, thermal stripper, alcohol bottle and cleaver – all on board – very easy to do!

In the next part of the video (03:52 – 05:14), FiberOptic.com’s national sales manager, Rick Carminati, demonstrates fiber preparation and testing connectivity from Point A to Point B. Remember, clean, test and inspect your fiber every time you make a connection! Using a PRO VFL-5 Visual Fault Locator you can test that you have continuity. Then it’s important check for cleanliness, and a VIP-35 Video Inspection Probe  is a fast and safe way to do just that. With a PRO Quick Click cleaning tool you can quickly and easily clean your connectors. Lastly, a PM-102A Power Meter and LS-102D Light Source will show you a the amount of loss from Point A and Point B.

While a power meter and light source  will show the amount of loss, it will not tell you where your loss is on the fiber. Our trade show guest and president of Precision Rated Optics, Tom DePaolantonio, demonstrates how to determine the location of a loss by using an OTDR. The TP-P6 Multifunction Test Platform is a dual wavelength OTDR — dual wavelength being 1310/1550nm single-mode — and it’s going to shoot 15 seconds for the first wavelength, which is 1310nm,  and 15 seconds for the 1510nm wavelength, giving you an overall average and most precise test result. While everyone should have an OTDR, because of the cost not everyone can. So what Precision Rated Optics has done, is develop an OBL-201A Optical Break Locator, which is 50% of the cost of an OTDR and equally as affective. 

Technology and equipment are constantly improving as the need for speed continues to rise at an increasing rate. It’s imperative to stay current with new technology. With the creation of Google Fiber and its competitors, new speeds will be out of this world. Already the world-record for the fastest transfer speed is 43 Tbps!
