LANCASTER, Pa., May 30, 2018 — Today FiberOptic.com’s COO, Sonny Hunt, is attending the 57th Annual Region I Correctional Education Conference hosted by the Correctional Education Association (CEA). He is there to represent FiberOptic.com’s Correctional Education Programs which have seen vast success among correctional institutions.

Reducing Recidivism

FiberOptic.com provides correctional institutions with a training program that focuses on teaching inmates fiber optic trade skills in order to help prepare them for fiber optic jobs, once they have been released. By providing students with the necessary skills, an alumni directory where they can post their resumes, and an alumni job portal where they can easily browse and apply for jobs, FiberOptic.com has shared in working towards CEA National’s goal to “help inmates achieve successful release and reintegration into society” (CEA National Website).

Why Fiber Optics

Fiber optic technology in the communications industry has been experiencing remarkable growth for over 15 years. For example, telecommunications carriers are expanding their bandwidth, allowing them to transmit signals faster and at a higher capacity than traditional copper wire. Some fiber Internet service providers are offering Fiber to the Home (FTTH), which enables them to
offer cable television, video, data and telephone signals over a single fiber optic line.

Cloud computing, increasing mobile usage and IoT are some factors contributing to rising bandwidth needs.  Optical fiber meets these needs. America has the highest number of fixed and mobile broadband subscriptions yet fiber optic broadband accounts for 11% of internet connections compared to Japan where it is over 70%. Fiber Optic Job Outlook

According to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2018, the median annual salary for telecommunications line installers and repairers in the United States was $56,340. The lowest-paid 10% of technicians reported incomes of $29,060 or lower, while the highest-paid 10% earned $85,500 or higher. (Line Installers and Repairers). At the time that this
post is created, an Indeed job search reveals 2,444 fiber optic technician jobs in the United States, 2,086 of which have an average salary of $35,000.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook projects a steady job growth for fiber optic installers and repair technicians at a rate of 14% between 2010 and 2020. (How Much Does a Fiber Optic Technician Make?) A number of fiber optic organizations have job postings or resources available, including The Fiber School in addition to the typical job websites like Career Builder, Craigslist, Indeed, Monster, etc.
